It's been like chasing after a runaway train since Trump took office. This is so bizarre I think the American people are in shock but they better unshock really quick before total control is lost and our rights and the Constitution ends up a distant memory. This is so bizarre, but we can't freeze we have to keep moving and pressing back.

You would think our congressional leaders would know the law of the land & how to protect it.The clown car in charge apparently knows nothing and is getting away with this blatant overreach of money. How many more times must we hear "I don't know about that"?The swinging door from legislator to lobbyist needs to stop. People don't win elections, money does. Corporations are not people; they don't deserve the same constitutional rights as people. We die; they live on in perpetuity. Support Move To Amend HJR54 which removes ALL constitutional rights from corporations, not only Citizens United. Money in politics today is the root cause of our problems. HJR 54 is gaining support in the House to move forward. Yes, I know who runs the senate but it's a loud voice for justice & better than doing nothing & having to hear "I don't know, I'm busy running the House" from MAGA Mike. It's your damn job to know!!

Just a thought:

Money didn't win Elon a victory in Wisconsin for the Supreme Court seat or in TX For his particular causes. I actually don't even think he won the race for Trump. It's about the messaging because Harris also had many millions donated to her campaign. I think it depends on the awareness of the people and their ability to recognize what's most important, and many are coming to realize when democracy and the rule of law are on the line, democracy needs to win!

When democracy is once again secure, it'll be about which candidate captures the issue the most people are upset about. Campaign promises have been broken for decades, falling short of their goals. But this is the first time I can recall that a candidate sought to exploit the people's frustrations purely to obtain the office of president ONLY to execute his orders for his own, and a handful of others', benefit.

No, but his money bought him an unelected position of extreme power in our "democracy" & governing, That powerful corporations & big money in government is an underlying root cause of this whole debacle is certain, IMO.

Expand full comment
Christy B.'s avatar

I was earlier addressing your comment that money buys elections, which it might or might not.

I don't dispute that money can buy access. I feel Elon was/is an especially gross example of buying "access" - he MAY have bargained his way into the job at DOGE under the guise of finding waste, fraud and abuse in govt debts and agencies when what he really wanted to do was wipe out USAID, NLRB (and maybe CFPB?) who were reviewing complaints against him. In THAT way I do believe money bought influence and even ultimate lever-pushing abilities, which is crazy!

For some people, all they need is an opening or a loophole, and for that reason alone it would be good to tighten up campaign financing, but as long as the SCOTUS thinks donating money is equivalent to free speech it's going to remain a problem. Lobbyists do have way too much power.

Sad to say, however, any presidential pal who isn't rich, but who has a helpful set of skills, or not, could be placed in that Musk special employee designation and avoid a Congressional confirmation hearing as well and we'd still be at their mercy even without them having big money. So it's my feeling that type of appointment should be forevermore disallowed or eliminated. We may not have safeguards to deal with an all-obedient Congress, but at least we could prevent another Elon Musk type of appointment who had free reign to run amuck in and around our nation's highly sensitive and classified data as he failed to acknowledge his glaring conflicts of interest.

With Elon Musk recently saying (paraphrasing) he won't be putting much/more money into politics it makes one wonder if it's because he realizes his money was not what got the Trump elected and him access, after trying again in some big venues and failing, or because it did work and now he's regretting what he created, in addition to feeling the unmistakable linkage between his success or failure to the happiness or wrath of the people who keep his businesses afloat?

Expand full comment
marcia schulz's avatar

Great points;dark money definitely goes to both sides.2024 wealthy donor and unprecedented dark money influence on the 2024 elections gave access to legislators in a manner not remotely comparable to that of the average citizen. As long as corporations have the same inalienable rights as people, our democracy will be threatened, involving much more than the 1st amendment right mantra of "money as free speech". It's also the right to not speak regarding what is in our food, water & environment.

4th amendment rights to privacy prohibit unannounced OSHA inspections in factories & workplaces allowing usual working conditions to be altered, threatening worker safety.

5th Amendment rights allow due process (ask those immigrants on the flight out of the country how that worked out for them.

The 14th amendment has several clauses:1)“Citizenship Clause” grants citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States;2)“Equal Protection Clause” guarantees equal protection and the same rights, privileges, and protections to all citizens; 3) “Due Process Clause” provides fair treatment in the judicial system to everyone.Yet in Delaware, a corporate state, not only are corporations and artificial entities entitled to vote but also any voter owning a house within city limits who transfers the home to a newly created LLC can vote twice, once as a regular voter and again as a representative of the LLC.

Nowhere in our Constitution are rights given to corporations!!

Congress can reign in the Supreme court. It has power to legislate, impeach and remove justices, regulate the court's structure and jurisdiction, and influence judicial appointments. It can influence public opinion but an informed public and media control are serious issues we face. HJR54, the WE The People amendment, is in The House & gaining support.See MoveToAmend.org.i to learn about this critical issue & how to fight against the injustice we the people face today.

I wonder if you might please consider perhaps limiting that to "SOME white, ELITE, CORPORATE MALE values," (though there are some white, corporate billionaires who do not fit into the category of having no family values). Please forgive me if I come off bluntly, but I'm probably as tired of having to clarify not all white people are the same as you may be of having been lumped together and judged for however you look. It's just the other side of the same coin. No race across the board is the same, nor has one race been totally included or excluded from the wealthy or the impoverished. Many of us whites have ridden on the disenfranchisement train along with everyone else who felt left out or forgotten (by the very people who look like us)! And many people of color have risen to levels of success much higher than some whites. True that our white faces may have more easily opened doors for us with the power brokers, "appearing" to belong to the privileged class, which probably did help when applying for a job or and hunting for a place to live, which is not nothing, but behind closed doors some of us struggled with many of the same socio-economic issues of family life in America. Unaware that we were possibly advantaged, thinking we were chosen on our merits, we took the job or the apartment, still not knowingly complicit in any covert racist plot or scheme. Yet upon realizing what kind of "thought group" we had just joined we chose to stay or move on. I'm proud to say I've always chosen to fight the good fight from within, or move on to be with other like-minded people, no matter their designation or "perceived" class. As such, I've tended to feel generally more comfortable around people of color and minorities because we all had something in common, we just wanted to be treated fairly and kindly and we cared about humanity, in general.

From what I've observed about privilege, however, WHOEVER gains power, WHICHEVER COLOR, RACE, RELIGION, etc., would do well to know that it seems to be the holding of perceived or real POWER that can blind and corrupt people to want to hold onto power. It's not limited to one color or race. It's evident in any national power structure. Whoever has it, not all, but some, will do much to hold onto that power. I believe it's because they fear that what they've done over time to those in the minority will be done, in turn, to them should the minority ever get into power. So they desperately want to hold onto it at any cost. In fact, I feel that they feel they NEED to. What they don't, and perhaps can't, know is that most people who have truly struggled and suffered at the hands of another would never consciously want to cause that kind of pain in anyone else. Unfortunately, some don't heal from their their pain and do, unconsciously, continue the cycle of abuse by replicating the exclusionary behavior of the previous power structure. That's why MULTI-CULTURAL AWARENESS, and HEALING from our past pain, is so critcal. I believe the Trump Administration doesn't want this to happen and that's why he is so determined to destroy historical data and heroic deeds of people of color and women, and to keep them out of positions of leadership.

We have to learn that gathering according to color or religion or by the amount of education is short-sightedness and doesn't go deep enough. We need to gather according to our HEARTS AND MINDS. Otherwise, we can become secondary victims via our own thoughts about being separate which then only perpetuates the "us and them" mentality. None of us need be victims and none of us need to be tyrannical masters or separatists. Beyond color, we have our entire humanity in common. There just needs to be more conversation about it, in my opinion.

As far as Republicans having ever been the party of "family values" it's so hard for me to see it. For as long as I've been alive I've tended to hear the Democrats (predominantly) fighting for Medicaid, Headstart programs, universal healthcare, Student loan forgiveness and/or free college tuition. For the life of me, other than Trump obviously creating a wide-ranging, battles fear of immigrants, I just don't understand how so many people fell for his sales pitch, though until Trump there had at least been a handful of Republicans who were compassionate toward general issues of humanity. I hear there still are, but they're too afraid to break ranks. Sadly, even the Republicans' general "pro-life, anti-abortion" stance is now revealed to be more about the oppression of women, and the desire for growing the population, and not about morality or the value of a human life. Afterall, they don't even want to make an exception to their anti-abortion stance in order save the life of the mother when he life is at risk. I would be amiss here I I didn't acknowledge there are also Democrats who are pro life and anti-abortion. So the rule about exceptionalism continues.

What I wish both parties, indeed, the country, would focus on is that I don't hear anyone saying they can't wait to get an abortion, treating unborn life as of it had no value. I don't hear either party saying they are "pro abortion," but neither can no one party AGREE it is a deeply personal, complex choice between a woman and her conscience. Period. Of course, I'd love to hear a "to-be" father's opinion on this matter, but interestingly enough, I haven't heard men speaking out on behalf of their unborn fetuses. I only have conjecture as to why, but I will keep that to myself.

I've probably revealed I have some personal ideas around some of these personal matters. I just hope in doing so I didn't alienate you or any group in any way, or assume a position of superiority or inferiority. We're all in this soupy mess together, and together I do hope we get to MLK's promised land.

Be well!

Dear Elizabeth , life long Democrat, I am not a lifelong Democrat . ( I spent part of my early twenties studying in Denmark and came home philosophically a Democratic Socialist working towards Universal Healthcare for all).I have lived in this very Red Republican county working in health and social services here for past 27 years. In 2020 during the pandemic, I remotely joined the Carroll County Georgia Democrats and worked with this then small group in the 2020 election. We received help in phone calling, and lettering writing from Dems around the nation to “get the vote out” and helped elect now Dem Senators Jon Osoff and Raphael Warnock and helped get out the local vote to win the races that turned U.S. Senate Blue )despite losing our Carroll County’s majority vote to The Reds

In the 2022 election, we once again received help from outside Dems, (with phone calling, post card writing, and small financial donations.) We were credited with getting out about 3,300 of the 11, 000 votes that swung Georgia Blue. Our Carroll County still won Red overall, but our Blue Votes made a difference. In 2024, out of county and out of state Dems even came in person to go door. Our County still voted

mostly Red, and we didn’t swing the vote enough Blue. But we learned and expanded, and our now gearing up for 2026 re-election for Senator John Ossoff, as it is a critical seat the Republicans are gunning for.

If you don’t like the how your local party is going, then please either put the energy that is fueling your disgust to helping in areas that are “ Getting their Act Together”. She claimed one of the reasons she shot the puppy was it lunged at her face, it probably mistook her for a monster. She doesn’t belong in public service.

Of course the dog lunged. How do you imagine she treated the puppy? There is not one ounce of love or kindness in her - i am sure that poor baby was mistreated.

It’s quite mean to call her a prostitute, but she sure is ugly.

That woman is pure evil with Botox, tacky makeup, and hair extensions. Don't even get me started on all the cosplay. But then, she fits right in with all the other incompetents in the cabinet.

It's only been 4 months, but it feels like 4 years already.
